What Causes Pain In The Knee After A Total Knee Replacement Surgery?

My Orthopedic surgeon told me I need total knee replacement surgery on both knees. I have been experiencing increasing knee pain for more than two years and can hear the bones grinding together. I have to take Norco 6 times a day to even function minimally. What exactly is total knee replacement?
