What Causes Muscle Spasms In The Left Side Of The Face?

The muscles on the left side of my face spasm and there is a slight drooping of the left side of my upper lip. What could cause these symptoms, which I have had sporadically in the past? I have diabetes, hypothyroid, blockage in distal heart artery and am taking medication for all of these conditions.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have spasms on left side of the face which is probably occurring due to Bell's Palsy also known as facial nerve palsy. It occurs mainly due to trauma, inflammation or viral infiltration of the nerve that can cause infection of the facial nerve that is a seventh cranial nerve and supplies muscles of face. Usually the symptoms goes in few days by their own. Doctor can be advised you to take steroids, vitamin B-complex supplements and cold compresses on the affected side for faster recovery. If there is viral infection antiviral medication like Acyclovir can be given. Start with physiotherapy and alternate warm and cool compresses and keep yourself under supervision of a neurophysician.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

As per your complain muscle spasms and drooping of left upper lip seems to be due to disturbances in the function of the facial nerve leading to parasthesia of the left side of face..
The condition is pointing towards Facial Nerve Palsy..
Other cause can be Ischemic Cardiac Attack but can be confirmed only after a proper clinical evaluation..
I would suggest that you should immediately consult an Emergency room or Medicine specialist and get evaluated and investigations like MRI scan, Ecocardiography, blood test etc can be done to rule out the cause and treatment can be done accordingly..
In case of facial nerve palsy you can be advised a Vitamin B complex treatment under strict supervision of your physician as you have associated medical conditions..
In case of other causes treatment will be done according to diagnosis..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
