What Causes Mood Swings In A PCOS Woman While On Birth Control?

Hi there, I am having issues with my doctor. I was diagnosed with PCOS three years ago, and my symptoms have just gotten worse I feel. My doctor put me on a low grade birthcontrol to control the symptoms, roughly six months after starting I started experiencing increased hair growth again and symptoms of Menopause and my doctor switched my medication in which my night sweats and mood swings got better but are slowly returning. Also I have depression and have had it since puberty, which I m taking Prozac for. Then this past spring I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, but then my OB/GYN took me off my synthroid telling me I didn t suffer from hypothyroidism because I didn t show traditional symptoms and didn t offer me a solution.... I just want to know if they could be related or if I should be worried. Also I have 1 cyst on my ovary that hasm t been looked at in three years.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Mood swings are a common complaint in women in the perimenopausal or menopausal phase(hormonal changes).

Since you have history of depression & hypothyroidism you should get a physical examination done by a GP.

Get blood & imaging tests done. Get treated. Stress, substance abuse, diet, medications may cause mood swings.

Certain medical conditions like depression, bipolar disorders, personality disorders, major depressive disorders also cause mood swings.

You may be referred to a counselor or psychiatrist. You may need anti depressants or anti anxiety medicines.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
