What Causes Lower Backache And Headache Along With Vertigo And Headache?

My 72 year old dad has been suffering for over two weeks with the following symptoms (kidney stone and shingles have been ruled out): lower back pain that gradually moved upwards, headache, body aches, lump appearing on left arm for short time, balance issues, rash on left leg up into hip and pelvis, no appetite so has lost weight and has extreme left knee pain. He did fall once because of his imbalance. What could he be suffering from? Thank you for any information you can give me because I feel so helpless.

1. At his age [72 years], the symptomwise approach will be as follow:

i. As the age advances Cervical spondylitis is the commonest cause, even then:

ii. If symptoms are severe or associated with any neurological sign [present], consult a Neurologist.

iii. Check with his blood pressure, neck movements and look for pallor & murmur [Cardiologist opinion], and ask for cochlear symptoms [deafness & tinnitus] & vestibular symptoms [vertigo & nystagmus]

iv. If the symptoms are not promptly controlled, ask for Hb%, X-ray cervical spine [AP & Lateral], ENT & Ophthalmic checkup [ as Vertigo is present], till then:

- bed rest, avoid movements if symptoms are severe.
- tablet cinnarzine 25 mg [thrice daily] till symptoms are controlled.
- capsules B complex: twice daily.

PS. check baseline investigations like serum electrolytes, thyroid, and cholesterol profile, Vitamin B12, and blood sugar level and consult an Orthopedic surgeon for evaluation of his orthopedic symptoms.
