What Causes Loose Black Stools?

For 2 wks I have a suspected femoral hernia (very low). Groin tenderness is worse in evenings - as I have yet to be seen by a specialist - long bank holiday - I'm anxious about incarceration. Just passed black, loose stools - should I be concerned about this?
