What Causes Light Menstrual Bleeding And Severe Cramps While Taking Estrogen Pills?

I am 53 years old and have been on birth control most of my adult life. I have moved to a lower estrogen pill over the past 3 years. While I continue to get very light periods every 28 days, the cramps have gotten significantly worse over the past few months. Is it time to stop taking birth control

Hello,

It is important that you have a check to determine the cause of the low abdominal cramps first. Low abdominal pain can be caused by oral contraception but there are many causes for this kind of pain and an examination and possibly some tests may need to be done first. If you have not had a pap smear in the last 3 years, this may be a good time to have it done. A gynecological exam is needed as well and possibly a trans-vaginal ultrasound. Only after a good examination and after the test results the doctor will be able to determine if the pain is related to any pelvic condition or to the pills and further decide if you should continue with the pills or not.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
