What Causes Irregular Periods?

My periods have been irregular ranging anywhere from 30-49 days. An average cycle is around 38 days for me. Now I m on day 54 of my cycle and still have not had a period. I ve been sexually active about once a week so I took a hpt on day 51 of my cycle and it came back negative. However, I ve had some pregnancy symptoms like headaches, being nauseous sometimes, heartburn, bloated stomach, and urinating more frequently. I have had a bunch of stress recently too though like getting a new job a couple weeks ago, trying to find another job, and having a long distance relationship so I m unsure if that is why I m not having my period yet or if I could be pregnant. I ve just never gone this long without a period.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking. I understand your concern.
A prolonged cycle of 38 days... if regular ... can be co sidered normalprovided there is ovulation.&in such a case delay of period beyond 40days... has first possibiliry of being pregnant.
You need to exclude pregnancybeyond doubt.. by repeat htp/usg pelvis ( which may show cause of irregularity)&finally blood hcg testing (as per your gynecologist's advise)
In absence of pregnancy hormonal imbalance can produce delayed period, pregnancy like symptoms.
psychologic stress also is a welknown cause for delayed periods.
An array of investigations to find about hormonal imbalance (ovarian, thyroidal cause, pcod, sometimes pituiyery hormones) would be checked to know exact cause of delay. This would be followed bymedicines to stimulate menstruation &then to treat the basic cause.
Please consult a gynecologist.
Thanks.

Thanks
