What Causes High Blood Sugar Levels While On Metformin?

Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here...Hi my name is Carrie, I was diagnosed with type ll. I have been doing well. My numbers have been perfect 80 to 150, then all of the sudden my numbers went up starting a week ago. I take Metformin 500mg with morning meal and evening meal, I also take 2 units of Humolog with dinner and take 12 units of Lantus at bed time. I don t smoke, I exercise 5 days a week, I think I m eating to much breakfast, I had oatmeal with a bannana sliced in it, some ground almonds and milk. I think I m eating to many carbs for my breakfast, because thats when my blood sugar is going up is two hours after breakfast, I m not sure what to do. I think I m over eating? Help

Diabetologist 's  Response
Dear Carrie,
Welcome to HCM
What you are facing now is the normal progression of diabetes. Normally at the onset of Diabetes things are under control with mere diet and exercise. slowly you start requiring drugs like metformin to make your body more responsive to your own body's insulin. Later you need tablets to bring out the insulin from your pancreas. Here in India we prefer adding more oral drugs than insulin. The dosage of insulin which you mentioned itself indicates that you will respond well to tablets unless there is some contraindication for using tablets. The dosage of humalog is too low to manage your post prandial spike, its not that you are over eating. SInce it is the normal progression of diabetes you are going through i feel its time to discuss with your treating doctor regarding dose increment. i would suggest you to discuss the tablet options with him so that you can avoid pricking yourself twice daily.
Hope i have answered your query.
Feel free to get back if you have any queries.
