What Causes Frequent Urination In A Child?

My 11 year old daughter has to frequently urinate. She doesn t have any other symptoms (no pain, no discharge, no bleeding, no burning when urinating). This is the first time she s had this issue where she keeps having to go to the bathroom right after she just went.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Brief answer: Check for urinary tract infection or abnormality, avoid excessive fluids intake, caffeinated drinks.

Explanation: My opinion is that frequent urination is a symptom of many conditions. First you should exclude urinary tract infection even if there is no burning sensation or fever. Accurately collected urine sample analysis would exclude this differential. Some problems may cause this condition, detrusor muscle instability which is important to control urine or posterior urethral valve may cause similar complaints. It is important to say that over fluid intake or excessive caffeinated drinks may also lead to frequent urination and that needs to be checked out.

I suggest my patients the following: Urine analysis, avoid excess fluid intake, especially before bed time. Some exercises may do some benefit in some cases to control the urge to urinate. The information provided by you is not sufficient to provide a good opinion. If someone comes to me with this condition I would ask them about psychological problems in the family, also if there is history of recurrent urinary tract infections.

Conclusion: I suggest you do a urine analysis, check with a urologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mahmmad Gamal
