What Causes Frequent Urination And Pain In The Groin Area?

I started having UTIs and Kidney stones about 3 years ago. One UTR after another - never had them before that. Normally the UTI symptoms are just frequent urination, but when they do the labs, it comes back mixed flora. The last couple of times I have had pain in my groin really bad, and my right side hurt, but there was no infection just blood. I had a CT scan a couple of months ago and there was 2 small stones in the kidney but they said nothing to worry about. My concern is could it be something like ovarian cancer? I have not had a period in about 5 years if that matters

Hello.

Thanks for writing to HCM.

I can understand your concern. You do have a cluster of symptoms which are not exactly explained by the tests you underwent.

Frequent urination and pain is a very common symptom of urinary tract infection. I hope the technique for collection of the urine is correct and the appropriate antibiotics have been taken for the same. If not, let us review the technique - you should clean the area with only water and take a clean mid-stream sample i.e. should not touch anywhere else and take the sample after letting some of the urine flow.

Also, you seem to have done a culture of the urine too which showed mixed flora. I hope the antibiotics required were prescribed. If a short course of antibiotics did not help, you may require a longer course like Nitrofurantoin or even Ofloxacin. Cranberry juice also helps in the treatment of urinary tract infections and is regularly prescribed.

If you have any other conditions like diabetes which makes you prone for infections, do consult your dietitician and physician and make sure your sugars are under control. It will help in clearing the infection.

Ovarian cancer does not usually present like that. It is quite symptom free until the very last stage where it will present as an abdominal mass or cause non specific symptoms like bloating, constipation, inability to urinate, fatigue, indigestion, weight loss, etc. It will also be picked up on the CT scan as enlarged lymph nodes. Hence, it is unlikely that your current problem is related to any malignancy.

However, kidney stones can cause all of the symptoms including blood in the urine. You may need to repeat the ultrasound scan to see the increase in size or change in position of the kidney stones.

Hope this helps. Wishing you good health.

Regards,
Dr Geeta
