What Causes Fluid Discharge From Nipples?

I am 18 years old. I am coming off of my period (will start the next month of pills tonight) and today I noticed discharge from both of my nipples. When I apply pressure to certain parts of my breasts, more discharge comes out. It is not bloody. This has happened a few times before- once there was a noticeable stain on a tshirt around one of my nipples and a few mornings ago, after sleeping on my stomach, there was a wet spot where my boob was on the mattress. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? I first thought that it could be a sign of pregnancy but I got my period this month? Help!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Nipples discharge is usually benign and commonly It may be sign of certain hormonal or infectious issues.

When you often palpate nipples, it stimulates hormones and can indicate breast discharge. Moreover, when you often check your nipples, it may cause some inflammation and give soreness in it.

To ease your mind and to make sure no cancer, cyst or abscess in the sore breast is present, please have an ultrasound of this breast done. If you have a fever, inflammation can be the reason.

If you have constipation, tiredness, hypothyroidism should be considered and TSH checked. If the discharge will be still present, you should have prolactin level checked which is common cause of this.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
