What Causes Extreme Elevation In BP Levels Post Recovery From A Flu?

Hello, I came down with a flu bug before Thanksgiving. A few days into it, I noticed my BP spiked. I felt hot, dizzy etc. I currently take a BP med in morning, but a doctor prescribed Amlodipine Besylate as another precaution. After several hours, my BP returned to normal for several days. Last night, I noticed it spiking again. I had trouble sleeping. I took my morning dose of Losartan/HCT today and my BP was normal after a couple hours. Now its getting high again. I still have a cough, chest congestion. Could I have an infection that is causing these spikes?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Though infection directly does not increases blood pressure but any stress can cause a rise in blood pressure as there is an increase in cortisol during infection which causes high BP.

So it's possible that the infection may be causing your bp to rise. I suggest you should take your medicines as advised and make a chart of a few days of your BP reading and then consult your doctor if there are any other medicines needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
