What Causes Excessive Sleepiness And Fatigue In An Elderly Person?

I sleep soundly but wake up early. I go for a 3.5 mile walk every morning. I come home and eat breakfast and work in the garden but by noon, if I sit down i fall asleep. I m only 72. I should not be so tired. Any hints? All blood tests are in normal ranges and no late onset diabetes.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for your question on HCM

I do understand your concern

With such presentations in my clinic, I would first rule out sleep apnea by doing a physical examination and to confirm it you need a polysomnography test. Treatment depends upon exact cause only. Besides, you may be advised few life style modifications like this-:

1)Try to lose weight at least 5%

2)Do regular exercise every day at least 30 mins in the morning and 30 mins in the evening

3)Try to avoid alcohol and sleeping pills

4)Sleep on your side or abdomen rather than on your back

5)Keep your nasal passages open at night and for it you can use saline nasal spray.

6)Try to avoid smoking if you have this habit.

Hope that helps, please let me know if you have further questions before visiting your primary care doctor.

Thanks and wish you a good health
