What Causes Elevated Levels Of Sex Hormone Binding Globulin?

I had a blood test and they tested my Testosterone and my SHBG level. The Testosterone is 520 and the SHGB Was 94 . It said the testosterone is pretty normal for my age, 63 Male, but the SHBG is Abnormal & very high. When I ask my Dr. About it, he said there was nothing to be concerned with. When I read about high SHBG levels I am very concerned. What is your opinion? Thank You Ver Much, Jack

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the sex hormone binding globulin is related to production by liver in form of a protein. It is associated with the transport of steroids testosterone, estradiol and dihydrotestosterone in blood as inactive form.

There are many reasons for high SHBG in blood like:
1. Ageing
2. Testicular tumors
3. Hyperthyroidism
4. Severe weight loss
5. Eating disorders
6. Liver cirrhosis

However, if the rest of the issues are ruled out, ageing is normal physiologic parameter to raise the SHBG and it is of not concern.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
