What Causes Dizziness And Frequent Headaches In A Child?

My son is 13 years old. He has been experiencing dizziness, and headaches frequently. (ie. each 2-3 times per week). Blood tests for iron have come back in normal range. Today, he blacked out during a dizzy spell and woke up on the floor with a hurt knee and head (bruised). He generally drinks 2-3l of water per day, eats a healthy diet with minimal processed foods, and exercises daily.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, Welcome to Ask a doctor services. I have read your question.

You have said nothing about any past illness from which your son might have suffered. Considering him to be healthy with no anemia; dizziness & headache in a healthy child is commonly due to dehydration, low BP, hypoglycemia.

Help him maintain blood electrolyte levels. Give him ORS, freshly made juice & soups. Keep him well fed with home made nutritious food.

For headache see an Eye specialist, he may need a pair of lens. Keep him away from stress as it causes tension headache which if left untreated will proceed to migraine with vertigo.

To rule out vertigo, let him get physically examined by an ENT. His treatment will depend upon the cause detected.

Hope I have answered your question. Take care.

Dr Nupur K
