What Causes Delay In Periods After Taking Metformin And Prenatal?

Hello, I am 26 years old and wanting to conceive but because of pcos it makes it difficult. I started taking prenatals and metphormine a month ago and have already lost nine pounds. My period is now a week late after having very regular periods for the last five years. I ve taken two at home tests which were negative. Could I possibly be pregnant or could it be because of the medication?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have a history of PCOS and now you are experiencing delayed periods. You are taking Metformin and prenatal. No, delay in periods is not due to the two medicines you are taking. Since your periods are delayed and you are trying to conceive, you are suggested to get blood and urine test for pregnancy done to confirm pregnancy. You can get clinically examined by a gynae, get test and investigations done. If you are pregnant you will be managed and if you are not, you will be accordingly treated.

Since you have PCOS, you are suggested to get it treated. Get imaging tests done. Polycystic ovaries have many follicles but they do not mature so egg is not released. Progesterone levels are too low and androgen and estrogen levels are too high because eggs are not released, it may cause irregular periods. Untreated PCOS may cause infertility. Since you are trying to conceive, both the partners should get treated for better result.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
