What Causes Breathing Difficulty After Taking Xanax?

I take .5m of Xanax when needed but noticed that the last time I took it on a flight that I nodded off and woke up almost gasping for air. I m afraid to take it again, I only do for emergencies, because I feel like it will cause breathing problems. Is this possible even if I m taking it during the day when I m not going to sleep?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, tab Xanax can cause respiratory depression and can lead to gasping symptoms like yours. It should be better avoided with other respiratory conditions and you also need to rule out other precipitating factors or coexisting diseases with pulmonary function tests and arterial blood gases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
