my father is 64 years had a high bp about 200/100 since last 6 to 8 months which he ignored, presently he was having pain in the chest.so we consulted a cardiologist and he on medication since last one week and bp is normal but the pulse is showing 54-56 is it normal.

Well, a good thing that he had the visit and was put on a treatment regimen for the high blood pressure. The normal heart rate is considered 60-100 beats per minute. However, I am assuming that he was put on therapy with a beta-blocker or verapamil or diltiazem for blood pressure-lowering purpose. These agents also act on the natural pacemaker of the heart and prolong the impulse conduction through atrio-ventricular node, thus slowing the heart rate. When under these agents, a heart rate down to 50 beats per minute is acceptable as normal. With this second effect, these agents reduce heart workload and improve its overall performance. Therefore, my opinion is that, at the moment, there is nothing to worry about. Advise him to adhere to the treatment, because blood pressure should be controlled and kept under 140/90 mmHg.
