What Causes Blood Urination During Periods?

Hi dr. Is it normal that I pee thick dark blood whenever I m on my periods. There s hardly nothing on my pad but when I go to the loo en pee, there will be this dark blood in the pot and on the toilet paper after I have wiped. Is it something to worry about?

Hello,
Thanks for letting us know your health concern. In the current scenario, the source of the bleeding should be visualized through a speculum examination. The origin can be from the urethra, the anal canal or from the genital tract itself. If there is no obvious reason to suspect the discharge to be issuing from the anal canal or the urethra, it is likely that the intrauterine collection is expelled as pressure is exerted during defecation or micturition. Else, the cause for the abnormal bleeding should be further explored and managed appropriately. Hope this helps.
