What Causes Bad Odor From The C-section Surgery Site?

hi i had a ceasection 10/24/14 i went in today for my staple removal, i noticed yesterday a bad smell coming from my wound. doctor let me know that i had no infection it was just the sweat collection under my tummy since i am overweight. he also said my wound was slightly open but nothing to worry about. He gave me a shot and some antibiotics to prevent infection. He said to return in 3 weeks. Is 3 weeks a normal time to go back? how long should i smell the odor?

Hi there,
Welcome to HCM,

If you are having bad smell and if its slightly open you will require more frequent care. Wound infections after surgery are known to occur, especially in overweight patients.

I would advise you to have alternate day dressings done to check if the wound healing is as expected or not. Also you should send swab to laboratory for culture and sensitivity to know which type of infection is present.

Antibiotics need to be given depending on the type of infection. Also, watch out for fever as it may indicate a more serious infection.

Wound healing adequately after a cesarean is very important as this can have implications on future pregnancies. Wound infection can weaken the cesarean scar and pose a problem in next pregnancy.

Hope this helps.
Regards.
