Short answer: Miscarriage is possible since it is early in the pregnancy.

Hi there,

It is typical for pregnancy symptoms to vary throughout the pregnancy, however since 9 weeks is still pretty early, it is unfortunately not unusual for miscarriages to happen at this stage.

You have two options at this point:

1. Have an ultrasound now to see if the pregnancy is indeed present and progressing well, and your doctor will be able to advise you from there. Note that an early ultrasound is useful even if nothing is wrong with the pregnancy, to make sure the date calculated from the menstruation is accurate.

2. Just wait and see. If it is a miscarriage, you will likely start to have some vaginal bleeding soon, and then you can go and get it checked out. Other reasons to go to a doctor immediately is if you have any other symptoms, like stomach pains or even fever (sometimes you don't bleed even if the pregnancy has failed i.e. a missed miscarriage).

If you choose the second option, what you can do is simply carry on as usual, take some folic acid supplementation, eat well and drink enough fluids. Make sure you have access to medical care if you do indeed start bleeding, but otherwise nothing else for now. While I understand that the possibility of a miscarriage might be distressing, I would like to reassure you again that it is not uncommon this early in the pregnancy, and may not be a sign of any fertility problems in you.

Hope this helps, and all the best to you.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
