General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Many underlying diseases can be responsible for causing ascites (which means fluid collection in the abdomen), including tuberculosis, kidney disease, pancreatitis, and an under-active thyroid. However, the primary causes of ascites are heart failure, cirrhosis. As a first step, liver function test, renal function test, thyroid levels and Echo should be taken for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
