What Causes Montgomery's Tubercles And Dark Areola Before Periods?

I'm trying to get pregnant for about 10 months - tracking basal body temperatures, lh ovulation test etc...
Usually two days before period spotting occurs. On my August cycle, 5 days before period (10dpo) I noticed spotting and it lasted until period. At 11 dpo I also noticed breast changes - Montgomery's tubercles (white pimples) and darker areola. Few days later it's started to go away and my period came. Similar thing happened last month - this time 8-14dpo.
What that could be? Just hormonal changes or?
