What Can Cause Foul Odor When Coughing?

I ve had a cough, stuffy nose and sinus pressure for a week now. I thought it was allergies as my mucous was clear. One day into my sickness, I coughed up what looked like a pea size ball of firm...food? or something. Ever since then, I have had a horrible productive cough. Sometimes the expectorant is whitish in color, but occasionally I will get a greenish one. Yesterday I noticed a foul odor when I cough. It s ONLY when i cough. I ve not ever had fever or anything nor do I feel bad, but it is possible I could have bronchitis or something? Does it just run it s course or should I break down and go see the doctor? How long should I wait it out?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

From what you are prescribing, it seems to be bacterial bronchitis. You need to start prescription antibiotics. You should see your doctor for physical examination and/or culture of sputum to determine the right causative agent and appropriate antibiotic.

Meanwhile, should take good care of your throat:
- wash with warm water and salt (gargle)
- take 1 teaspoon of olive oil and honey each morning
- increase fluids intake
- take pain-killer to reduce inflammation and pain
- take vit.C supplementation

Wish fast recovery!
