What Are The Side Effects Of UTI On Pregnancy?

I'm 36 weeks pregnant today and i was having braxton hicks contractions the other night but my body just didn't feel right so I went to the hospital and they diagnosed me with a urinary tract infection I have since the been drinking lots of water and cranberry juice they aid my cervix was still hard so what I'm wondering is on average how quickly can the cervix soften up? I've also been having throbbing pain in my lower back could it be because my baby is in position but is trying to get me ready for the real thing? This is my 5th pregnancy, 3rd to make it full term, & I never experienced this before?

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

It is most likely that your back pain is from your urinary tract infection. I know you mentioned hydrating and taking cranberry juice, but were you advised to take antibiotics? If you truly have a UTI you should be receiving antibiotic treatment becaus if you are not, you can develop a kidney infection, which can be serious.

It is also completely normal for your cervix to still be hard at 36 weeks. You still have a month until your due date, and that is plenty of time for your baby to drop and your cervix to soften.

So I suggest that if you are not taking antibiotics for your UTI it may have spread to your kidneys which can cause the symptoms you describe. If you are already on medication it may not be working. Either way I suggest you go back to the labor unit or see your doctor right away so they may re-evaluate you. Kidney infections can spread to the blood and put your health and the baby's at risk.

I hope this information was helpful and that you feel better and see a doctor soon.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
