What Are The Side Effects Of Sprintec?

I have been on sprintec for 2weeks now. I started it on my first day of period. Till now I am still bleeding.. I am not sure if this is one of the side effect. If I just stop taking it right away. Will the bleeding stopped? I am taking sprintec for the acne. Now acne almost disappeared so I am asking if I can stop taking it and stop bleeding. Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Sprintec contains norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol, which is a combination of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone used commonly as contraception to prevent pregnancy.
Hormones often drive acne development, which is why teenagers get pimples as their hormones become active.
Sprintec works to curb acne by overcoming the signals telling the sebaceous glands to produce oil as they counter the effects of androgens on the sebaceous glands, leading to less oil and ultimately, fewer breakouts.
Common side effect encountered with its use is vaginal bleeding between periods (spotting) or missed/irregular periods, especially during the first few months of use.
Kindly continue its use as recommended for your acne problem.
In case the bleeding issue continues and does not stabilize, you need to consult your doctor to change the mode of treatment.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
