What Are The Side Effects Of Remicade?

Hello Doctor. I am a 49YOF. I have hade Crohn s disease for approximately 22years. I never have been on any med s beside the occasional steroid, Prednisone. I am due to have surgery for a fistula, stemming from my rectum. I am terrified. After the surgery, I have to begin treatment for my Crohn s. Options are Remicade or Humira. I m leaning towards the Remicade, but have to see what cost my insurance plan will cover. I am so scared of the side effects. Do you know of any cases that the Remicade was very significant in the treatment of Crohn s?

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Remicade (infliximab) & Humira (adalimumab) belongs to the same drug class and both of them are effective in Crohn's disease, because they reduce inflammation of bowel.

Most common side effects of Remicade are:
Abdominal or stomach pain
cough
dizziness
fainting
flushing of the face
headache
itching
muscle pain
nasal congestion
vomiting, etc.

While some people using Humira have developed a rare fast-growing type of lymphoma (cancer that affects the liver, spleen, and bone marrow, and it can be fatal), I recommend to use Remicade.

Call your doctor at once if you have:
-signs of infection (fever, chills, flu symptoms, confusion, or pain, warmth, or redness of your skin);
-signs of tuberculosis (fever, cough, night sweats, loss of appetite, weight loss, feeling constantly tired);
-chest pain, ongoing cough, coughing up mucus or blood.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
