What Are The Side Effects Of Flixotide?

My son began taking flixotide for eosinophilic oesophagitis 7 weeks ago. After about a week he began to suffer with urgent bowel movements , causing soiling to his underwear (and much distress) as well as a lot of wind. Over the last week or so his voice has become very hoarse and he complains it is hard to breathe. Are these side effects of that medication? I can t see anything on the leaflet regarding diarrhoea. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Flixotide contains fluticasone that belongs to the group of medications known as corticosteroids or steroids is used in the treatment and prevention of bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. It helps to decrease inflammation in lungs and prevent bronchospasm, wheezing or shortness of breath. It may cause hoarseness of voice, oral thrush or candida infection, sore throat, soreness in the food pipe or oesophagus, GIT upset, gases, indigestion, diarrhoea, bloating, heart throbbing, cramps, muscle tremors etc. Again, sometimes Flixotide may cause an unexpected increase in wheezing and difficulty breathing or paradoxical bronchospasm, stuffy and runny nose, flu like symptoms etc. If these side effects persist for long or bother your son, then you should consult his doctor first for medical help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
