Bronchial asthma

What is Bronchial asthma?

An acute or chronic disorder characterized by widespread and largely reversible reduction in the caliber of bronchi and bronchioles, due in varying degrees to smooth muscle spasm, mucosal edema, and excessive mucus in the lumens of airways. Cardinal symptoms are dyspnea, wheezing, and cough. Attacks or exacerbations may be induced by airborne allergens (molds, pollens, animal dander, dust mite and cockroach antigens), inhaled irritants (cold air, cigarette smoke, ozone), physical exercise, respiratory infection, psychological stress, or other factors. The signs and symptoms of bronchial asthma are caused by the local release of spasmogens and inflammatory mediators (histamines, leukotrienes, prostaglandins) and other substances from mast cells, eosinophils, lymphocytes, neutrophils, and epithelial cells. Airway caliber may be abruptly and drastically reduced during a paroxysm or after diagnostic challenge with methacholine or histamine, and may quickly return to normal after administration of a bronchodilator (inhaled β-adrenergic agonist or subcutaneous epinephrine).

Im 31 yrs old and had a slightly abnormal ekg they don t think anything is wrong but just to be sure they ordered a stress test is it unusual to have an abnormal ekg if nothing is wrong? Iwas having chest heaviness and pressure I do have asthma but have also been totally exhausted for over a month no matter how much sleep I get.

doctor1 MD

Hello,
Thanks for your query
As they found nothing on EKG that's why they have ordered for a stress test and if anything abnormal is there it will be revealed on stress test inspite of having normal EKG
I think your asthma control is not optimal as your symptoms persist. I suggest you to consult...

Dear Mr/Mrs Pandey,
It is difficult to diagnose asthma in little children as pulmonary function tests are difficult to perform by children and therefore the diagnosis is usually retrospective based on response to treatment.
Chronic noctunal (night time) cough, audible wheeze after playing or...

I m military and in basic and AIT (both located in GA) I developed a odd sounding chronic cough. I went through numerous tests to include XRAY, Methacholine challenge, GERD, Allergy and others I can t recall. I also have rhinitis which I m told by the allergist is not due to any allergy (I had a full skin test). It mostly subsided when I was stationed in Ft Lewis, WA while I was taking flonase and zyrtec. I ve since been stationed at Hunter AAF, GA and now the cough is back in full force and my rhinitis is no longer controlled by flonase. An allergist back at fort gordon told me it was cough variant asthma( after successfully reducing the symptoms with prednisone and then advair) but the pulmonologist at both fort gordon and fort lewis insist that I don t have asthma. While my symptoms are present I have a shortness of breath during running and similar exercises but to a lesser extent in washington. I had no issues during my deployment to Iraq (my 2 mile run times dropped four minutes with no changes in behavior) I was 18 when in Basic and AIT and now am 22 soon to be 23. Any ideas?

i can't find anyone with my problem...just pieces here and there. I am a 22 year old female. i have a family history of heart disease but my mother and father are fine. I usually have a glass of red wine almost every night and some weekend i go out and drink. I've had an occasional cigarette when drinking but not any time lately. I work in a stressful job but i don't feel like it is taking a toll on me, the only reason i mention it is because i hear chest pain can be stress related. i get a decent amount of exercise and doctors have always told me i am in good health aside from borderline asthma in high school. I also had a few panic attacks mid high school but haven't had any since. for the last two weeks or so i've had bad chest pains in the center of my chest between my breasts. the usual off and on pain through the weeks has felt like my ribs are being pushed or punched inwards and sometimes it makes it hard to breath and i actually start breathing harder. here and there i think i've felt a heart murmer and here and there i feel like someone stabs me in the chest or heart with a knife. its freaking me out and as i type i feel a deep pain i've had for the last 20 minutes. it seems like these pains are getting worse and im in the middle of searching for a new doctor. i dont know if i should wait for something bad to happen to go to the e.r. or if i should just book a doctors appointment and wait out the pain.

my son just reported pain behind ear - not jaw area - currently not running fever, but usually doesn't with ear infections. He is 11 years old, had tubes at the age of 4 for 3 years (1 removed sugically). Has history of ear infections and exercise induced asthma. He has severe allergies (cats, trees, weeds) and takes 2 oral & 2 nasal medications daily before and during allergy season. He is approx 5'5", 155 lbs. Any idea of what is going on - should I contact his doctor?

How do you treat upper respiratory infections. I am 78 years old and have a long history of these episodes. There is no pattern to my URI's - get them once a year or not for several years.
