What Are The Risks Of Undergoing Abortion At 3rd Week?

Hi,

My name is Srabantika and I'm from Bangalore.
I got married one year back and still continuing my studies and therefore me and my husband had no plan for a baby till 2012.

I had irregular periods (+/- 2/3 days). But my last cycle was delayed by 12 days and I had intense pain in my abdomen during those 12 days. Due to this I could not know the safe period and when my period got delayed again this time with abdominal pain, I went for pregnancy test and found positive.
I had my thyroid test and found it high. (5.9) Therefore wanted to undergo treatment before having a baby.

This is my first pregnancy and I'm really confused what to do. Kindly tell me the risks of abortion. It is right now a 3 week's old pregnancy.

Thanks a lot.

Hello dear
Understand your concern
You have two choice. First you can continue the pregnancy with thyroid disease with treatment of it.
You have to visit the doctor for thyroid treatment every 4 week during first half of pregnancy and at least once between 26-32 week of pregnancy.
You should keep the Target Tsh level as below:
1st trimester:0.1-2.5 mIU/L
2nd trimester: 0.2-3.0 mIU/L
3rd trimester: 0.3-3.0 mIU/L
Serum TSH should be assessed after 6 week after delivery of baby

Second option is abortion. As your pregnancy is only 3 week no major complication in the pregnancy. It is safe and effective if done under the supervision and guidance of gynecologist. Mifepristone should be followed by misoprostol after 48 hour by gynecologist. Abortion will complete in 4-5 days without complication. USG should be done after 14 days to confirm incomplete abortion for safe practice.
Abortion also done by surgical process like suction evacuation.
If you will do abortion take the proper treatment of thyroid and also check before next pregnancy and after delivery to keep the target TSH level with thyroid medication like propylthyouracil and mithemazole.
Hope this may help you
Best regards
Dr. Sagar
