What Are The Possibilities Of Epilepsy After Suffering From Stroke?

I had a punctate infarct in the uncal region 2 years ago. I have had both normal and abnormal EEG, frontotemporal slowing with sharp waves was noted. I had not had any seizures since the stroke. What else could be causing the abnormal EEG if it is not epilepsy?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

EEG abnormalities do not necessarily mean an increased risk of getting seizures.

First of all, about 5% of normal people could have abnormal EEGs.

Secondly, brain damage due to any reason (stroke included) could give rise to abnormalities in EEG. So, in your case, it is possible that past stroke is responsible for the EEG abnormalities.

In any case, since you have not had seizures, you do not require any anti-epileptic drugs.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.
