Hello,

You have a mass behind the knee and that is causing you discomfort and severe pain. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, the commonest cause of such symptom is baker's cyst which results due to problem with the knee joint, like arthritis, osteoarthritis, or a cartilage tear.

However, other medical conditions also cause such symptoms like deep vein thrombosis (DVT), meniscus tear, hamstring and PCL injury, etc. Serious medical conditions causing similar symptoms are tumors like lipo-sarcomas, osteosarcomas, and osteochondroma are tumors are found behind the knee. You are suggested to get all required blood tests, biopsy, and imaging tests done and get it evaluated by a GP so that treatment can be started at the earliest.

Osteochondroma is a benign tumor. Lipo-sarcomas and osteosarcomas are malignant. Sometimes, when bakers cyst ruptures, it causes similar discomfort and pain. Get examined, get treated. In the meantime, you can take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines after food for relief. Icing the knee for 10–20 minutes with an ice pack wrapped in a towel may help. Keep your knees at rest as much as possible.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
