What Are Recurring Muscle Cramps In Legs And Back, Pain In Hips And Joints Suggestive Of?

I am a 54 year old woman. I have a history of being overweight, but I am now at a normal weight. Recently i started having muscle cramps in my legs and back that would come and go. I have bunions and one is larger and more painful than the other. Now I am having hip pain and find walking difficult past five miles. I used to hike many more miles just last year. I also have joint pain here there and everywhere that spreads around, goes away, and comes back. I did have a circular rash on my wrist several months ago.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Firstly, I will address the muscle cramps. There is a need to have some test for muscle cramps. The tests are 1. Full Blood Count 2. ESR3.

Test for Rheumatoid factor, Anti Nuclear Factor (ANF)4. Plain X-Ray of the hips and lumbo-sacral spine There can be many more, but it is inconvenient for you to do all at once.

So, these are some primary tests you should do. Some of the drugs you can take while it pains1. NSAID drugs 2. Plain Paracetamol 500 mg can be taken as required3. Muscle relaxants 4. Balms, pain relieving gels, etc can be applied.

Other general guidelines to be followed:

1. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water like 3 litres per day

2. Maintain electrolyte balance. Drink sorbet, fruit juice, etc

3. Do not carry out exercise, if you do so.

Now, Bunion. The test may include X-Ray of the feet (Projectional Radiography).

For now, Paracetamol 500mg will relieve youUse soft shoes. Can apply Ice packs. All these tests should be done without delay.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
