What Are Causes Of The Dark Red Spots In Sputum?

I have had a sinus infection for about 2 weeks. I had difficulty getting anything out of my sinuses and a neti pot wouldn t help. It s finally starting to clear up and in the past few days on three seperate occasions I have cleared large, solid brown sputum with dark red spots in it. Any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to the sinus infection. If your mucus is tinged red or brown, it's blood. Blood in your mucus could also result from frequent nose blowing or breathing very dry air. I suggest to do a sinus X-ray for further evaluation. I also suggest to use a saline nasal spray to clean the nasal passages and the sinus cavities.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
