Was Diagnosed With COPD. Taking ProAir. Since Then Have Shortness Of Breath, Burning Sensation In Tongue

Good afternoon. Was diagnosed with COPD about 4 years ago, but it hasn't really bothered me until recently. I started taking ProAir. And since I started, I have been having EXTREME shortness of breath - to the point where
walking 50' from the car into the post office can trigger a heavy breathing episode. Another issue has also taken
place since the Pro Air began - my tongue is always burning. Burning to the point where I have to put either Orajel on my tongue after a half hour or so, or rinse my mouth with Peptol Bismol before inhaling, but none of these
treatments last more than an hour. I'm not too sure the COPD has much to do with it, as there is little, if any, coughing up phlegm or anything else. I used to take Ventilone (sp), and don't remember any negative side effects. But last time I took it was about 4 year ago. What's your suggestion?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

Proair and Ventolin both contain the same drug call Albuterol which is a beta agonist bronchodilator medicine effective topically.

It is unlikely that just a change of brand should have that much shift in efficacy. Rarely if a person is allergic to the additive components then it may be possible to have such symptoms.

The very simple solution is go back to Ventorlin and see the difference, if it also causes the same trouble then it must be the disease that has grown in severity.
The problem of rawness in mouth also seems related to disease severity only.
You should get reassessed and treated by a local physician in that case.

I hope this answers your query.

In case you have any follow up queries or doubts, you can forward them for me, and I shall be glad to help you.
