Vaginal Ultrasound Done. What Does Findings Suggest In Simple Language?

I just got my results back from a vaginal ultrasound and it reads, "The uterus measures 10.2x 5.5x 6.9 cm. Its retroflexed in configuration. Muliple myometrial masses are visualized. The largest in the region of the posterior fundus measures 4.0x 5.0x 5.2 cm. There is a 3.3 cm lesion in the anterior uterine wall. A 2.2 cm lesion in the posterior uterine wall is also identified. Multiple smaller lesions are seen throughout the myometrial. The endometrial stripe measures approximately 6 mm in thickness. The left ovary is not identified."

This is the third time I've had fibroids. I've had them removed twice in the past 12 years and I had an ablasion last year. And here I am again. I just need a simplified explanation of the above findings.

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,
The vaginal ultrasound report suggests:
1. The uterus is retroverted. Uterus is anteverted in majority of cases. , however. retroverted uterus is not pathological. This is a less common finding.
2. The uterine lining or the endometrium is 9 mm in thickness. The endometrium increases in thickness in the proliferative phase.
3. There are multiple fibroids varying in diameter from 2.2 cm to 5 cm.
These fibroids are present in the anterior wall, posterior wall and in the fundus.

There is recurrence of fibroids.
If they are symptomatic, they may have to be removed surgically.

Thanks and take care

Radiologist Dr. Vivek Chail's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

As you are familiar with your condition, your uterus is bulky, folded back and having multiple fibroids (?three in number). The largest one is in the upper part (fundus) while others are in anterior wall and posterior wall.

Endometrial stripe at 6 mm is normal. Your age is not mentioned.

Even if you have had ablation, there is possibility of regrowth if the blood supply to these fibroids is sufficient. Uterine fibroids can be absorbed quickly in the following three months after ultrasound ablation. After that the absorption process may slow down. However, as long as the uterine fibroids have been inactivated (imaging examination proven), there is no need to worry too much about them. After ultrasound ablation treatment, the uterine fibroids will be gradually absorbed and shrunk within 1 to 2 years, but not all of them will be absorbed completely.

The recurrence of fibroids post ablation occurs more in younger women.

Hope this helps.
