Type 2 Diabetic, Lower Back Pain After Taking Metformin. Advise?

I take metformin for type II diabetes. I first started taking it in October after about two weeks I experienced serious lower back pain. I went to see an Orthopedic and they found nothing, I stopped taking it and the back pain was gone in a few days. Under advice pf my doctor I started taking it again in April and again the chronic lower back pain,I could not get out of bed this morning.

Hello,

You are a Diabetic on metformin.
You are complaining of back ache following metformin therapy.
Metformin may cause myalgia and Vitamin B12 deficiency and myopathy.
But it is to soon to associate your complain with metformin.
There may be another structural cause to it.
MRI of the spine may help.

General & Family Physician Dr. Pavan Kumar Gupta's  Response
Hello,
The most common side effects of use of METFORMIN are gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, pain abdomen, diarrhea, metallic taste in mouth etc.
The back pain symptoms you are experiencing are not heard of and as such have not been reported in any medical literature.
However the classic challenge and re-challenge approach which you tried with METFORMIN is highly suggestive that your backache may be related to the use of METFORMIN.
Although diabetic neuropathy and use of statins might cause backache but disappearance of backache on discontinuation of METFORMIN rules out this  possibility.
You must report this matter to your doctor.
Thanks
