Taking Methotrexate, Why Is My ALT Score Increasing?

Hi, I have ra and I am right now only on methotrexrate (max dose of 10 2.5 mg pills once per week) and I just got back a blood work up result. Was wondering about the ALT score of 69. Last time it was 40. time before 33. Slowly going up since 2010 when the ra started. My ra dr wants me to retest in a month and stay away from pain meds. I don t take any over the counter meds so I don t know why this is occurring.

Methotrexate is a medicine which has side effect on liver. it is a liver toxic medicines .ALT is a enzyme which is produced in liver cells so when liver get any damage then this enzyme get release in blood. Since you are taking this medicine since long time it is causing such side effects in you. I would suggest you to decrease doses of this medicines as there are other medicines like SAAZ and HCQ which are not so toxic and can be taken safely.
