Taking Apo-citalopram. Suffered Digestive Disorders (IBS). What To Do?

I am taking apo-citalopram -10mg daily. I did not intend to take long-term but when I tried to gradually go off it I suffered from digestive disorders which I guess I would describe as severe IBS. Is this typical? My doctor suggested I return to the drug, which I did and it brought relief, but there are still side effects from taking it that are not resolved. Am I stuck with this drug for life in order to avoid IBS? I had digestive issues prior to taking the drug but they were more severe after going off it.

Dear friend,

Thanks for posting your query on this website. I can fully appreciate your concern for problem.

Symptoms of IBS tend to aggravate by anxiety, emotional upsets, mental stress, excessive tea/coffee intake.

Hence, it is imperative that you avoid anxiety and relieve your mental stress : do regular meditation; try to take life easy and exercise tolerance.

Citalopram helps by curbing mental stress and anxiety. Therefore, you continue with the drug for the time being. If the side effects have become intolerable, consider switching over to an equally-effective medicine - Tab Serteraline 50mg daily at bedtime---> increase the dose after 15 days to one tablet twice daily.

Strictly adhere to the diet prescribed by your doctor. it should contain salads in plentiful. Avoid tea/coffee/alcohol/soft-drinks.

I am confident that you will certainly benefit from the advice.

May I assure you that I am always available for your assistance and will try my best to cure your condition to the best of my experience and knowledge.

Please feel free to revert back to me in case of further clarifications, if any.

HAVE A NICE DAY AND A SPEEDY RECOVERY.

Fond Regards,

Dr.(Col) R Karanwal
