Swollen Right Leg. Broke Ankle, Put Plates And Screws. Anything To Worry?

Hi, my name is Patricia I broke my right ankle in two places four and a half months ago. The Dr. put plates and screws in my right ankle. My concern now is my right leg is swollen all the way up to the knee. It's twice the size of my other leg. Should I be concerned right now? I have my foot up, and large ice packs on it.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on your description, I suspect two possibilities as the cause of your swelling
(1) PHYSIOLOGICAL DEPENDENT OEDEMA - which usually resolves with foot end elevation and use of graduated compression stockings.
(2) DVT (deep vein thrombosis) - Formation of blood clots in the veins of the leg leading to swelling. A doppler ultrasound is essential to diagnose this condition.

So, I suggest you to consult your treating doctor and discuss the issues.

Hope this information is helpful . Good day
