Swelling And Pain In Right Side Of Lower Back, Radiates Down To Buttocks. Treating For Sciatic Pain. Any Suggestions ?

I have been treating for sciatic pain for about 9 months. I have swelling and pain on the right side of my lower back (just below the small of my back) and it seems to be on a bone and the pain radiates down and through my buttocks. At times the pain runs down my leg and into my heel and sometimes around to my groin - depending on how long I want to put up with it until I go for an adjustment. I has never "gone away" no matter how many times I treat. I have also noticed that when I rub on the spot it feels LOTS better and sometimes when I rub it a lot, it will cause my stomach/intestines to "work". I continue to see the chiropractor because that is the only thing that seems to alleviate the problem at least for 24-48 hours at a time, although not always. I have noticed when it hurts the most, I also then have pain in my right side area (between my bellybutton and hip bone in front). Any suggestions?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The description suggests that you have LUMBAR DISC DISEASE with RADICULOPATHY.

The initial management of your problem will be as follows -

* avoid lifting heavy weights
* avoid forward bending activities
* Use a lumbosacral back support
* Intermittent pelvic traction
* Maintain optimum body weight,if you are obese
* Physiotherapy to strengthen your back muscles. Physiotherapy has to be done only after the acute pain has subsided.
* Judicious use of analgesics and muscle relaxants.

If all the above measures fail, then an Epidural injection of steroid may help.

An MRI scan is needed to know the exact pathology in the spine.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Consult an orthopedic / Spine surgeon and follow their advice.
