Hello, My family and I need help with my sister. She is bipolar and has been off of her medication for over a year now, to try to get pregnant. That did not work out for her and her husband and now she is in an acute manic state. We are trying to get her to take her medication, but refuses. We have tried to take her to the er in hopes the doctor could help in some way, but pretty much they say she is not bad enough yet. What can we do? Please help.
In acute manic phase anti psychotic medicine is generally given either oral or injectable.
If any how she is ready to take medicines , haloperidol or olanazapine can be given to control agitation. With haloperidol, pacitane should be given to prevent extra pyramidal side effects. Simultaneously mood stabilizer should be given in loading dose like sodium valproate or quetiapine.
If she is not ready to take medicines, she can be given forcefully according to laws prevailing there. In that injection haloperidol with phenargen and if needed injection lorazepam. injection olanzapine also available. haloperidol and risperidone are also available in liquid form to mix it with water or milk.
Hope I have answered your query. Regards, Dr.Chintan Solanki.
