Suggest Treatment For Under-active Thyroid

femaile age 59. 30 years ago thyroid went underactive and I was placed on synthroid. Blood tests were done every 6 months to monitor levels. 18 months ago my internist ran a blood test and said I was over replaced at .05 and took me off synthroid. Since then I have gained weight (50 pounds), am tired, memory not great. For the last 9 months I have had 4 fratures in the pubic bone and my 2 orthopedic surgeons have no explanation for these. I had a bone scan done that showed the bones in upper body and lower to be excellent however I continue to suffer these fracturs in pubic area. I was under the impresion once on thyroid it was a lifetime. Am I wrong?

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Good day,
Noted your question. Majority of hypothyroidism cases need life long treatment especially if you had been on treatment for such a long time..

TSH level of 0.5 was indeed in the low normal range and I would reduce the dose slightly and will never stop it. Untreated hypothyroidism is a cause of osteoporosis. You might need to give us the exact DXA scan ( bone scan)T scores at Spine and Hips to assess further. In addition, if you continue to have recurrent fractures, we need to run tests to rule out secondary osteoporosis. For this, I would suggest to meet an endocrinologist rather than an orthopedician. In addition, since you have memory loss, please get a repeat Thyroid function test, Vitamin B12 level as well.
