General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The narrated features of swelling ankle spreading up to knee with difficulty in walking and pain indicate cellulitis from various contributing factors as:
- Bacterial or fungal infection of the sole part of lower limb
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Low immunity
- Unknown trauma
- Smoking as major risk factor
- Immobility

Treatment depends upon the cause and differs widely, however, I can guide salient features as:
- Foot elevation over 3 pillows
- Avoid leg dependent position for long period of times
- Avoid smoking if applicable
- Control of body weight, blood sugar, cholesterol

Consult your primary care at earliest before further damage to the limb and other systems of the body.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
