Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Pain In The Knee Post An Accident
I went to the emergency room 8 days ago after a minor bike accident. I brushed a wall with the outside of my left knee and on the rebound the body of the bike smashed into the inside of my left knee. The swelling and subsequent high pain level have not subsided. X-rays of my knee (artificial following a full knee replacement in 2001) and femur were negative and the emergency room doctor labeled my injury a traumatic hematoma. The area is about three inches from front to back and eight inches running from the middle of the inside of my knee up my thigh. The pain is a 9 or 10 when I stand up if I have had my leg elevated. If my orthopedist were to evacuate the excess fluid on the inside of my knee, what would they actually do and how long would it take to recover from the procedure? Thanks.

In your case, there are few possible causes and if there was no injury then some other chronic disorder may be present. Without more information, it is not enough to determine the diagnosis.
It could be a hematoma (bleeding in the tissues) or a swollen knee joint capsule. If it's in the back of the knee then it could be a Baker's cyst.
Clinical examination (and perhaps fluid aspiration if there's any) would help to determine the diagnosis. Either an orthopedics specialist or your primary care physician can do that.
Until then you can try to apply ice packs (not directly on the skin - wrap them with a towel) and perhaps use some painkillers starting with paracetamol (acetaminophen) and advancing to NSAID if paracetamol is not enough and there's no contraindication for NSAID.
