Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat, Cough And Loss Of Voice
I care for 91 year old lady. I have had a sore throat and coughing for 2 days and today I have voice problems...maybe laryngitis? I am not feverish or have any other symptoms but no voice. I am drinking lots of liquids and getting rest. Please advise if I should return to my caregiving as I do not wish to infect her if this is a virus. Also, what treatment should I start? Thank You, Ramona
The symptoms you mention in query are ointing towards a condition known as ' SILENT REFLUX' , also known as Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) . In this condition the acidic content of esophagus comes backward due to dysfunction of esophageal sphincter . But this condition has not prominent symptoms like heart burn. Problem like sore throat and hoarseness (due to laryngitis) in voice occur . I would suggest you to :
Avoid spicy and heavy meals specially during night .
Eat at least one hour before going to bed .
Take a light walk after every meal .
Take antacid like gelusil .
Consult gastroenterologist for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order certain tests like X-ray of upper respiratory track and endoscopy . Doctor may prescribe drugs like ranitidine and omeprazole.
