General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history about your 18 year old son having meningococcal vaccine 2 weeks ago and then developed sinus like infection, sore throat, strep like infection, low grade fever, sick for 3 weeks, Amoxicillin did not help, WBC 20, is that 20,000?
Since your son is not okay for 3 weeks and the vaccine was given 2 weeks ago means the infection was present before vaccination was given.
Well, I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult an ENT Surgeon for proper clinical ENT evaluation, endoscopy and other investigations as follows:
Tests of blood again to see to for changes in WBC, sugar, urea, creatinine, culture and sensitivity.
Tests of urine.
X-ray of chest.
CT scan of nose and sinuses.
All these will help to pinpoint the cause.
Change over to injectable cephalosporins and Amikacin like antibiotics covering gram negative infection can help to control the infection well.
Give him plenty of warm fluids.
Nasal decongestant drops and steam inhalation.
Anti-inflammatory medications.
All these will help for a complete recovery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
