Suggest Treatment For Recurring Inflammation And Irritation In The Penis

Hi, I was diagnosed with a case of Jock Itch and was prescribed 60mg of Clotrimazole to apply twice a day to the infected area. The treatment worked almost instantly and the jock itch is gone for the most part and I am still treating it. However, my penis and forskin (I am uncircumcised) became inflamed at glans and the neck where it forms my forskin. I thought maybe my treatment of the jock itch was just irritating my oenis but then I notice an area of my penis because very red and the surronfing area became red as well and a day later a spongy bump formed on my penis glan and the area is bright red. I have no Idea what is going on with my penis but it seems that the irritation is reoccurring because this is the 6th time my penis has become irritated out of a three month span.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Clotrimazole is an anti fungal medication. This inflammation may also be related to a fungal infection like the jock itch. Fungal infections are one of the more common causes for redness of the glans and foreskin. This or another anti-fungal may be used though if it is severe, your doctor may suggest an oral anti fungal instead. A short course of a topical steroid, that is ydrocortisone (for approx 3 days), may help reduce the inflammation as well.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
