Suggest Treatment For Recurrent Plasma Cell Balanitis

Dear Doctor, I am a 27 years old male and was diagnosed with Plasma Cell Balanitis when I was 22. Dermatologist prescribed me a water based steriod cream which worked fine and I was free of balanitis within a week. The doctor however asked me to practice good hygiene which I ignored for a very long time. A month before I noticed that the balanits has recurred and now over a wider area. I went to see a GUM clinic doctor this time and he prescribed me Trimovate Cream (0.5 mg clobetasone and nystatin). Within 2-3 weeks time, the flare up was completely gone and the size of the red spot is also decreasing. I was advised to use it for six weeks- i.e. another 2 weeks for that. But I don t think it will clear up the spot completely by the end of six weeks. Are there any other creams which are more effective than Trimovate and which will work faster against balantis? If Trimovate is the best, how long should I use it? I don t want to have a circumcision. Will my sex life be affected due this condition? I am practicing a very good hygiene- washing the glans twice a day and apply the cream after completely drying the glans.

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this balanitis that you have reported. I will like to have an image to know if the residual rash is one that can be taken care of by a steroid cream. You would be able to do this by accessing our premium services. After a review, I would be able to provide real more information on what the next best move would be to address this. I understand you really don't want circumcision but should this be the lone permanent solution, I will strongly recommend that you think over it again. If your sexual partners have no problems with the look of the scars caused by this rash, then there would be no more impact on your sexual life. It would greatly depend on how your partners take and accept the condition. Of course, you would not be able to have sex during flares.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
