Hello,

You are experiencing persistent cough after tonsillectomy. Many patients do complain of accumulation of mucous in the throat after tonsillectomy. Mucous formation occurs in the throat due to inflammation at the site of surgery. It can also cause an itchy feeling in your throat and nausea. You are suggested to gargle your throat with warm salt water 2-3 times a day. It will help to reduce inflammation and also clear the mucous formation.

Taking ginger tea and honey based cough syrups are helpful as honey is anti inflammatory and anti bacterial too. You can take analgesics for relieve. Stay well hydrated, take water and fluids adequately to avoid dehydration. Dehydration may trigger cough, you can also keep cough lozenges in your mouth to stay comfortable. Use room humidifier and stay away from addictions, like smoking, drugs, alcohol, etc.

Other cause for persistent mucous formation is post nasal drip, mucous from the sinuses drips down the nose and settles at the back of the throat. Mucous stuck at the back of the throat can cause regular cough. Get clinically examined by an ENT/GP, get imaging tests and blood tests done to detect sinus problems. Get your sinusitis treated at the earliest.
br>Conservative treatment is commonly given, in case of nasal septal deviation, surgery is recommended. Post-nasal drip is the most common cause of persistent cough, hoarseness, sore throat and other symptoms. It may linger for weeks or months. Taking decongestants and antihistamines are helpful. Nasal irrigation and steam inhalation may be helpful.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
